Pequot Lakes' Lane Commits to South Dakota State University

Vanessa Lane (Pequot Lakes) has officially committed to South Dakota State University.  MN Milesplit had a chance to catch up with Lane to learn more about her decision, her future goals, and her advice to younger athletes.

What schools did you consider for your post-high school plans?

University Of Minnesota, Belmont University, Notre Dame, University of Iowa, University Of Nebraska-Omaha, University of Montana, University of North Carolina, North Dakota State, University Of North Dakota, St.Cloud State.

What ultimately led you to commit to the SDSU?

I liked the coaches and where they felt I would fit in. I felt comfortable when meeting the other athletes, I just felt like SDSU was a good fit for me. The new Sanford athletic and track complex that is under construction and should be ready by the time I attend is really going to be nice. I loved the opportunity in academics that I will receive and the campus is beautiful.

Have you identified a major or area of study?

I have not yet but am interested in studies revolving around sports and may consider exercise science.

What is your favorite HS memory as it relates to track?

My favorite high school memory is winning State for the first time on the 4 by 100 relay team. The win was so special because I was able to do this with my role models and the first time I accomplished one of my goals for track.

What are your goals for your collegiate career?

I hope to help the team and continue to improve. I also would love to do well at a conference or regional meet.

What advice would you pass on to an athlete trying to make their college decision?

I would recommend that you fill out college recruiting questionaires so that the coaches know of your interest. I also would recommend you talk to the coaches and do as many unofficial visits as you can to determine the 5 colleges you want to go back to for official visits, by doing so hopefully it will make your decision easier. Ask question to the coaches so they know you’re interested, make sure you research their program and the school.

Additional thoughts/advice:

Just remember that you get out of something what you put in. I always lifted extra, ran longer and trained harder because deep down I knew there would be athletes that I would face that were training hard. It is not easy to make it to the next level so you must put the time in no matter how gifted you are, it could mean the difference in college choices and scholarship amounts.
