Area roundup: Tech freshman wins, Sartell girls second at Apollo

Times staff report

St. Cloud Tech freshman Laura Steinke won the girls race in a time of 15:29.12 at the Apollo Early Bird Invitational held Monday afternoon at the V.A. Medical Center.

The Tigers finished in fourth place as a team with a score of 94. Andover won the team title with a score of 61 — edging out second-place Sartell by just one point.

"It was kind of bittersweet," Sabres coach Jeff Kellerman said. "We were happy to be in the running for a team title at this point in the season. But it was disappointing to miss out on it by one point."

The Sabres were led by senior Mackenzie Dockendorf, who finished in fourth place with a time of 15:46.88. In all, Sartell had five runners finish in the top 20: Shelby Hall finished 12th (16:18.11), Anna Lindell finished 14th (16:38.15), Halie Kaufman finished 15th (16:45.66) and Kayla Larsen finished 17th (16:52.66).

"Our top five runners are all veterans," Kellerman said. "Even though Mackenzie is our only senior, all of our runners are experienced. So they are where we expect them to be to start the season."
