Salute To Seniors: Josiah Campbell - Hallandale High School

Today we salute Hallandale senior Josiah Campbell.

What was your most memorable race/moment?

My most memorable race/moment would have to 800m run at the state meet. I worked hard all season to get to the state meet, overcoming many trials and tribulations, so being there and running well cemented everything for me. It made me truly see that I'm right there with everyone, right with the best.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

My biggest competition over my four years was myself. I struggled with confidence and seeing that I was just as good as everyone else. I was thinking too much. It took me two years to realize that.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment was doing what some people didn't think I could do as well as proving to myself that I belong.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

If I could go back and do it all over again, I wouldn't change anything at all. My running career in high school was a learning experience. Every practice, every race taught me something and prepared me for the practices and meets that would follow. If I changed anything no matter how little, I wouldn't be the runner nor the young man I am now.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

The most difficult obstacle that I had to overcome was truly myself. I was in my own way sometimes overthinking races which hindered me. Once I got out of my own way and realized that I was just as good, everything changed.

What will you miss the most?

I think that I will miss my coach and  a few of my teammates the most. Coach Dawn believed in me from the start and I did my best to never let her down. As for my teammates, they believed in me as well and pushed me in practice day in and day out.

What advice you would give to younger athletes?

The only advice that I would give to younger athletes would be to always believe in yourself and to continuously work hard no matter what.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

My coach, Coach Dawn Spann has influenced me both on and off the track. She helped me learn to believe in myself and also taught me what would happen when I put in the work and trust in her as well as trust my training. She is like a mother figure to me and I am extremely grateful to have her in my life.

What are your college plans?

My college plan is to go to Emmanuel College (Georgia) and continue to run track.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to thank my mom and dad as well as my other family members. All the coaches who helped me get to where I am as well as all my teammates for always pushing me to be better.
