Wildcats track and field continues success

Celest Ventura
The St. Kate's track and field team completed a busy three day stretch with plenty of highlights at both the Drake Relays and the Macalester Invitational.

On Thursday afternoon senior Greta Sieve competed in the steeplechase at the 101st running of the Drake Relays. Competing alongside Division I and II athletes from around the country Sieve took advantage of the opportunity. She placed third and ran an NCAA Automatic Qualifying time. Along with a guaranteed trip to the NCAA Championships in May, Sieve's time of 10:34.91 moves her to #2 on the Division III National Performance list. Her time not only shattered her own Wildcat school record by 19 seconds, but it was the second fastest time ever run by an
MIAC student-athlete in the the steeplechase event.

On Friday, Sieve joined with teammates Amanda Manship, Kim Engel and Kayla Engel to set a new Wildcats school record in the Distance Medley Relay.  Despite heavy rain and chilly temperatures, the quartet's time of 12:29.50 was 17 seconds ahead of the previous best SCU time, and was good enough for an 11th place finish in the field of 22 Division II and III teams. The Wildcats 4x4 also ran the third best time in school history placing 22nd with a time of 4:00.88

On Saturday the Wildcats competed at both the Drake Relays and the Macalester Invitational. At Macalester the Wildcats were lead by a strong showing from the throwers. In the discus throw the Wildcats went 1-2-3, in the shot put they placed 2-3-4, in the javelin SCU went 1-2, and in the hammer throw St. Kate's athletes placed first and fourth.

Celestine Ventura finished first in the discus throw, second in the hammer throw and third in the shot put.
Samantha Larson placed first in the javelin throw and second in the shot put.
Rebecca Zenefski set a new personal best with a second place finish in the javelin
Jamie Kelly placed second in the discus throw and fourth in the shot put.
Averyl LaSalle was third in the discus and fourth in the hammer throw.

On the Macalester track Keslie Hansen had season bests in the 100 and the 200 meter dashes. Melissa Elverud had a season best in the 800, and Kelsey Eder had a strong debut in the 400 hurdles.

On the Drake track the Wildcats sprint medley relay team of Sam Levercom, Erin Coughlin, Kim Engel and Kayla Engel lowered the Wildcats school record with a time of 4:11.19.

The Wildcats return to action on Saturday May 1st at the Capitol City Championships hosted by Hamline University.
