DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Augsburg College men's track and field team set two school records in relay events over the weekend at the prestigious Drake Relays at Drake Stadium.

On Saturday morning, the Augsburg 1,600-meter sprint medley relay squad of Nick Ward (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.), James Strand (SR, Brainerd, Minn.), Rick Wolke (SO, Belle Plaine, Minn.) and Matthew Schaefer (FY, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) set a new school record with a 3:27.07 time, finishing fourth among the 23 schools in the college division (Division II, Division III, NAIA). The Auggie squad won their heat and had the third-fastest time among the Division III schools in the event.

The 3:27.07 time broke the old school record of 3:33.18, set by Richard Woods, Desman Oakley, Josh Natzel, Christian Dawson in 2000.

On Friday, the 800-meter relay squad of Ward, Strand, Gil Millette (FY, Brainerd, Minn.) and Wolke set a new school record in finishing ninth among the 29 schools in the college division in 1:28.34. The time was the fourth-fastest among the Division III schools in the event.

The 800-meter relay time of 1:28.34 broke the old school record of 1:29.51, set in 2001 by Richard Woods, Derik Thaden, Jon Boeck and Matthew Shannon.

The 400-meter relay squad of Millette, Strand, Wolke and Ward placed 17th in the 30-school college division field in a 42.94-second time on Friday. The time was the seventh-fastest among the Division III squads in the event. Augsburg has the top time in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in the event, a 42.09-second clocking set earlier this season.

The 101st annual Drake Relays, known as "America's Athletic Classic," is considered one of the most prestigious track and field meets in the country. More than 7,200 college, high school and amateur athletes are expected to compete at the event, including 1,242 male collegiate athletes from 115 schools.
