Telphia, relay win titles at MIAC championships

WINONA, Minn.-- Augsburg College sprinters Whitney Holman (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) Shanek Telphia (FY, Chicago, Ill./Gage Park HS), Ashley Carney (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS), and Katie Vrieze (JR, Richfield, Minn.) won the 400-meter relay, and took four of the top nine places in the 100-meter dash to lead the women's track and field team at the MInnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference outdoor championships, held Friday and Saturday at St. Mary's University. 

As a team, Augsburg placed eighth at the MIAC meet with 54 points. The Auggies' eighth-place finish marks the highest Augsburg has finished in the conference championship meet since 2005.

Augsburg set a school record in the 400-meter relay en route to its first outdoor relay conference title since 2004, while shattering the previous mark by more than a second with a time of 47.88 seconds. The relay time is an NCAA championships provisional qualifying mark, and is the 12th-fastest time among NCAA Division III teams this season. 

Telphia won the conference championship in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 12.44 seconds, and finished second in the 200-meter dash, recording a time of 25.54 seconds. Telphia also recorded a third-place finish in the long jump, recording a distance of 5.22 meters (17-feet-1.5). 

Holman recorded a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash in 12.44 seconds, and finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.37 seconds.

Carney finished fifth in the 100-meter dash, recording a time of 12.63 seconds, while teammate Vrieze recorded ninth-place finishes in both the 100 and 200.

Caroline Senungi (JR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) finished eighth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.68 seconds.

Augsburg will compete at the Wisconsin-LaCrosse Last Chance meet on Thursday (5/20).
