Sophie Ristau added to her athletic legacy at St. Paul Highland Park by qualifying for the state cross country meet for the third time. The senior qualified for Saturday’s state meet at St. Olaf College in Northfield after placing eighth in the Section 4AA meet with a 4,000-meter time of 15 minutes, 42 seconds at the University of Minnesota Bolstad Course.

Ristau won the St. Paul City Conference individual championship last month, leading the Scots to the team title. She also has qualified for the Nordic Skiing state meet.

Ristau, her sister, Natalie, her mother, Annette, and aunts, Paula (Class) Winsor and Katie (Class) Marquard, hold five of the top 10 running times recorded at Highland Park.

Ristau has a 4.0 grade-point average in Highland Park’s International Baccalaureate program.

  • St. Paul Harding’s Hall of Stars will welcome its 2010 class on Saturday during a dinner at the school. The program, which will honor seven athletes and one team, begins at 6 p.m.

    Honorees are Steve Lee (1940 graduate), Marty Lee (1944), Alvin Markfort (1977), Craig Farrell (1980), Bill Taleen (1981), Jenny Kettering Doerfler (1991) and Kelly Brown Magnuson (1994).

    The 1980 softball team, which was 17-0 and won the St. Paul City Conference championship, also will be recognized. The team, coached by Ken Mauer, included: Carolyn Biebighauser, Sandy McGahn, Judy (Shimon) Dean, Mary Lee (Hanson) Nelson, Terri (Hardman) Kincaid, Ceil (Conway) Wicker, Geri (Brisson) Renner, Cheryl Anderson-Stramel, Holly (Pierson) Connors, Shelly (Thein) Arndt-Berntson, Melissa (Kroening) Orsello, Lee Ann (Kohrt) Garhofer, Lynn (Godleski) Leverty, Patti O’Brien, and Lisa Segelstrom.

  • White Bear Lake senior defender Rachel Trudeau has given an oral commitment to play women’s soccer at North Dakota State.
  • South St. Paul’s Sam LaShomb has given an oral commitment to play women’s hockey at North Dakota.
  • Senior quarterback Joe Springer, a former Pioneer Press player of the year while at Cretin-Derham Hall, has led Brown University to a 4-3 record, including 3-1 in the Ivy League. Brown has not won an Ivy League title since 1976. On Nov. 13, Brown plays at Dartmouth, whose top receiver is Tim McManus, a former standout at St. Thomas Academy.
  • Matt O’Connell of Clear Lake, Wis., rushed for 177 yards and four touchdowns and passed for 187 yards and three more TDs in the Warriors’ 57-34 football victory over Cameron in Week 9. That brought his career total to 10,148 yards, breaking Wisconsin’s all-time state record held by Franklin quarterback Ben Hempel, who had 9,860 yards from 2001-04.
  • Twenty finalists have been selected for the Wendy’s Minnesota Student-Athlete Award. One male and one female winner from each state will be selected on Friday.

  • The Section 4AAAAA football championship game between Cretin-Derham Hall and Eagan on Friday at the University of St. Thomas has been moved to a 7:15 p.m. start.
  • Grantsburg, last year’s Division 3 champion, returns to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association’s state volleyball tournament that will be played Thursday through Saturday in Green Bay.

    The Pirates (35-0), state champions in 2001 and runners-up four other times, play Wisconsin Heights (29-8) in Friday’s semifinal.

    Eau Claire North (31-6) faces Kaukauna (30-7) in the Division 1 semifinals on Thursday.
