Schafer sets school record

MEET RESULTS

SAINT PAUL, Minn.-- Matthew Schafer (SO, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) broke his own school record in the men's 1,500-meter race and recorded a second-place finish to lead the Augsburg College men's track and field team at the Capitol City Classic hosted by Hamline University Thursday evening. No team results were recorded at the meet.

Schafer's time of 3:56.21 broke his own school record by nearly a second on a cold and windy afternoon at Hamline's Klas Field. Schafer's time is currently ranked as the third-fastest among MIAC participants in the 1,500 this year.

Other top individual performers for Augsburg included sprinter Nick Ward (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) who recorded second-place finishes in the 100-meter dash and long jump, and a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash. Ward currently holds the top 100-meter and long jump marks in the conference this season.

Rick Wolke (JR, Belle Plaine, Minn.) recorded a third-place finish in the 200, clocking a time of 22.99 seconds, while Joe Arnold (JR, Grand Rapids, Minn.) recorded a fourth-place finish in the 400, and a ninth-place finish in the 200. Arnold's time in the 400 marked a season-best performance.

In the relay's, the Augsburg 4x100-meter relay team recorded a first-place finish in the event, clocking a time of 42.68 seconds. The Augsburg 4x100 team currently holds the fastest time in the event among MIAC schools this season.

In the field events, Augsburg triple-jumper Emmanuel Marcellino (JR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) recorded a distance of 13.61 meters (44-08) to finish third in the event. The distance marks a season-best for Marcellino, who currently holds the third-best mark in the event among MIAC competitors this year.

The Augsburg men's track and field team returns to action next Wednesday (4/27) at the Macalester College Twilight Meet.
