DES MOINES, Iowa -- Two Augsburg College women's relay squads had impressive performances at the 2011 Drake Relays on Friday, with the 800-meter relay squad setting a new school record in the process.

The 800-meter relay squad, of Shanek Telphia (SO, Chicago, Ill./Gage Park HS), Caroline Senungi (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS), Ashley Carney (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) and Katie Vrieze (SR, Richfield, Minn.), set a new school record with a 1:42.54, fifth-place finish in the college division event. The relay squad broke the old school record of 1:42.60, set last year. The Auggies finished fifth among the 27 Division II, III and NAIA schools in the event.

Augsburg's 400-meter relay squad, made up of Kandace Bostick (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Burnsville HS), Carney, Vrieze and Telphia, finished 10th among the 39 teams with a 48.73-second finish in the college division preliminaries. Augsburg missed reaching the eight-team finals by just one-tenth of a second.

Earlier this season, the Auggie 400-meter relay recorded a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Division III outdoor national championships in 48.48 seconds. The time is currently tops among MIAC squads.

The Drake Relays, known as "America's Athletic Classic," is one of the largest track and field meets in the country, with more than 7,000 athletes in competition. In the women's college and university division, a total of 1,295 athletes from 128 teams are in competition.

Augsburg returns to action at the St. Thomas Tommie Twilight Meet on Wednesday (5/4) at 4 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
