Auggies compete at Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Two Augsburg College men's relay squads had impressive performances at the 2011 Drake Relays this weekend, with the 1,600-meter sprint medley squad recording a fifth-place finish in the process.

The Augsburg 1,600-meter sprint medley squad of Nick Ward (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) Rick Wolke (JR, Belle Plaine, Minn.), Joe Arnold (JR, Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Matthew Schafer (SO, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) recorded a time of 3:28.60 to finish in fifth place in the college division event. The team fell just over one second short of breaking the school record set last year in the event.

Augsburg's 400-meter relay team, which consisted of Wolke, Arnold, Ward, and Gil Millette (SO, Brainard, Minn.) finished 22nd among the 38 teams with a 42.85-second finish in the college division preliminaries.

The Augsburg 400-meter relay currently hold the fastest time among MIAC schools in the event this season.

The Drake Relays, known as "America's Athletic Classic," is one of the largest track and field meets in the country, with more than 7,000 athletes in competition. In the men's college and university division, a total of 1,295 athletes from 128 teams are in competition.

Augsburg returns to action at the Hamline University Meet of the Unsaintly on Friday (5/6) at 11 a.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
