Relay team nets school record time

MEET RESULTS

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Katie Vrieze (SR, Richfield, Minn.), Kacie Bahr (JR, Brainerd, Minn.), Caroline Senungi (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Shanek Telphia (SO, Chicago, Ill./Gage Park HS) set a new school record in the women's 1,600-meter relay and recorded a first-place finish in the event to lead the Augsburg College women's track and field team at the University of St. Thomas Tommie Twilight Meet on Wednesday evening.

The relay team's time of 3:57.77 shattered the previous school record by almost five seconds, and fell just short of meeting an NCAA championships provisional qualifying time in the event. The Augsburg 1,600- time currently ranks as the second-fastest time recorded by a MIAC team this season.

Augsburg's 400-meter relay squad, made up of Vrieze, Telphia, Kandace Bostick (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Burnsville HS) and Ashley Carney (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) also performed well at the meet, recording a season-best and NCAA championship provisional qualifying time of 48.24 seconds en route to a first-place finish. The relay team, which is looking to defend its title in the 4x100-meter relay at next week's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship meet, currently holds the top time among MIAC teams in the event this season.

In addition to her performance in the relay, Senungi recorded a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles, as she clocked a time of 15.56 seconds in the event.

Ashley Carney recorded an 11th-place finish in the 200-meter dash, finishing with a time of 26.57 seconds.

In the field events, Augsburg pole vaulter Brittany Tuberg (SO, Apple Valley, Minn.) finished in 12th place, recording a height of 3.16 meters (10-feet-4.25), while Bostick finished 11th in the long jump, as she recorded a distance of 4.68 meters (15-feet-4.25).

The Auggies return to action this Friday and Saturday (5/6-7), as they travel to Hamline University to participate in the annual Meet of the UnSaintly.
