Schafer wins 800 at Meet of the UnSaintly

MEET RESULTS

SAINT PAUL, Minn.-- Matthew Schafer (SO, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) recorded a season-best time of 1:52.84 en route to a first-place finish in the 800-meter run to lead the Augsburg College men's track and field team at the Meet of the UnSaintly hosted by Hamline University Saturday afternoon.

Schafer, who missed an NCAA division III national championship provisional time by .14 seconds, will enter next weekend's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship meet ranked first in the 800-meter event. Schafer is also ranked fourth in the conference in the1500-meter run.

Another top-performer for Augsburg this weekend was sprinter Joe Arnold (JR, Grand Rapids, Minn.). Arnold recorded a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash, clocking a conference best time of 48.92 seconds in the event. Arnold also added an eighth-place finish in the 200, recording a time of 22.69 seconds.

Rick Wolke (JR, Belle Plaine, Minn.) recorded a time of 50.18 seconds in the 400 to fininish in ninth-place, while teammate Hunter Melius (FY, Shakopee, Minn.) recorded a season-best time of 10:19.46 to finish fifth in the 3000-meter steeplechase.

In the field events, Augsburg triple jumper Emmanuel Marcellino (JR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) finished in second-place with a distance of 13.25 meters (43-05 3/4). 

The Meet of the UnSaintly marked the Auggies final tune-up event before this weekend's (5/13-14) MIAC championship meet.
