Pantilla, relay win titles at MIAC Championship Meet

SAINT PETER, Minn.-- Shane Pantila (SR, St. Michael, Minn./SM-Albertville HS) became the first Augsburg student-athlete in school history to win the outdoor conference triple jump title while Augsburg sprinters Joe Arnold (JR, Grand Rapids, Minn.), Rick Wolke (JR, Belle Plaine, Minn.), Gil Millette (SO, Brainard, Minn.) and Nick Ward (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) claimed a first-place finish in the men's 4x100-meter relay event to lead the Augsburg men's track and field team at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference outdoor championships, held Friday and Saturday at Gustavus Adolphus College.

As a team, Augsburg placed eighth at the MIAC Meet with 48 points. The eighth-place finish marks the fourth year in a row Augsburg has finished eighth or better at the outdoor conference championship meet. 

The Augsburg win in the 400-meter relay marks the first time in school history that the team has won the event at the MIAC outdoor championship meet, as the quartet of Arnold, Wolke, Millette, and Ward recorded a time of 42.17 seconds.   

The Auggies were able to add another individual title to their collection, as Pantila finished first in the triple jump with a distance of 14.15 meters (46-5.25). Pantilla, a second-place finisher in the event at each of the last two MIAC outdoor championship meets, became the first Augsburg student-athlete to win the triple jump conference championship in school history.

Other top performers for Augsburg included Matthew Schafer (SO, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) who recorded a season-best and NCAA outdoor championship provisional time of 1:52.35 in the 800-meter run to finish in second-place. Schafer's time fell just under a second short of topping the school-record time in the event.

Augsburg sprinter Nick Ward recorded a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash, and just missed winning the event for the third time in his career as he clocked a time of 11.22 seconds in the event finals. 

Rick Wolke recorded a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash, finishing with a time of 22.69 seconds. Wolke has recorded a top-three finish in each of the last two outdoor conference championship meets, as he finished second in the event last season.

Joe Arnold recorded a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash, clocking a time of 49.45 seconds. The fourth-place finish marks the highest Arnold has finished at the outdoor championship meet during his career.

The Auggies will wrap up the outdoor portion of the season at the University of LaCrosse Last Chance Meet on Thursday (5/19).
