Girls track sending record number to state

The La Crescent High School girls track team had a record-setting evening at Paul Giel Field on May 30 at the Section 1A Track and Field Championships, winning five events and qualifying four individuals and two relays on to the Minnesota state meet. Although the boys were shut out in regard to state qualifiers, they did manage to get three individuals and one relay team onto the medalists award stand.

The Section 1A meet actually began on May 29 with finals in half the field events and the 3,200-meter run, plus prelims in all the hurdles, sprints and sprint relays. Jack McCormick, the Lancer boys’ lone field event qualifier, managed to negotiate the bar at 11-0, but came up just short in his attempts at a new personal-best of 11-6 and settled for a tie for eighth-place in the pole vault. Sage Precht and Danielle Frederick were unable to get a distance in the long jump that would have qualified them for the final three jumps and wound up 10th and 11th in the girls’ long jump competition.
