Eric Gebeke of White Bear Lake won his second consecutive 800-meter title Saturday, June 9, in the 2A boys track and field meet, ignoring temperatures in the mid-80s to lower his winning time from last year by more than 1.2 seconds.

He hit his checkpoint splits perfectly, he said, to finish with a time of 1 minute, 52.01 seconds. He won a year ago in 1:53.39.

“I’m happy with today,” he said. “The goal was to repeat, and I did that. It was a little hot, though.”

Gebeke, also a standout in football and basketball for the Bears, is headed to Notre Dame to run track next year.

The son of former University of Minnesota track athlete Mike Gebeke, Eric plans to also run in the junior national track and field meet next week.
