Section 1AA has helped produce some of the best runners to come out of Minnesota in recent years, but perhaps none can match Garrett Heath. While still at Winona high school, Heath won the XC/3200m/1600m triple both his junior and senior seasons. En route to his 2003 championship, Heath also managed to run the fastest Section 1AA time since 1999, and his 2002 win is also in the top ten. Upon graduation, Heath went on to have an All-American running career at Stanford University, and he still runs professionally to this day, having competed at the US Olympic trials in the 1500m in 2008 and 2012, and in the 5000m in 2016. Of course, the Heath name lived on after Garrett's graduation from both Winona and Stanford, and on into the pro ranks, thanks to his younger brother Elliott, who owns the second-fastest 1AA time since 1999.
