Emma Bates of Elk River was yet another athlete who's otherwise-impressive high school resume did not include a State Championship. However, the three-time Section 7AA champion finished in the top 15 at State five times, peaking with a runner-up finish as a senior behind only Maria Hauger's first championship run. But despite never being a winner of a high school state championship, she went on to have one of the best collegiate careers of any Minnesota runner ever. Running for Boise State and after two years of development, she was nearly unstoppable. By the end of her time at Boise State, she was a twelve-time All-American, twice a top-three finisher at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, and the 2014 Outdoor 10,000m National Champion. She's also competed at the 2014 and 2015 US Championships, and the 2016 Olympic Trials.
