Prep cross country roundup: Donnays dominate Section 6A

NEW LONDON – Emily Donnay crossed the finish line 21 seconds ahead of her sister Anna to win the Section 6A girls championship for Eden Valley-Watkins/Kimball Thursday afternoon at Little Crow Country Club.

EV-W/Kimball took fifth as team with 186 points. Emily Donnay came in at 14:42.46. Both Donnays move on to the Class A state meet on Nov. 1 in Northfield.

Holdingford punched their ticket to state with a first-place finish (74 points). The Huskers were led by Angel Rick, who took fourth place (15:28.37).

St. Cloud Cathedral’s Rachel Eickhoff was third (15:16) to lead the Crusaders to a second-place finish and a spot in the state meet. All of Holdingford and Cathedral’s runners qualified for state with their teams.

Holdingford also won the boys side behind a strong performance from Andrew Zachman, who finished second (16:24.68). Cathedral’s Tyler Johnson was third (16:26.96), edging Albany’s Kevin Lamb, who took fourth (16:29.30).

Willmar Community Christian’s Ben Burgett was the medalist (16:20.59). Royalton’s Zach Carlson (16:37.27) took fifth and Albany’s Bailey Jensen was 12th (17:11.96).

All of those runners advanced to state.

SECTION 8-2A MEET

ALEXANDRIA – The Bemidji boys and girls each finished second at the Section 8-2A Championship and clinched a spot in the Class 2A state tournament.

The top two teams from each race advanced to state.

The Lumberjacks are joined by Alexandria, which finished first in the boys race, and Willmar, which finished first in the girls race.

Detroit Lakes’ Matthew Lundstrom took first in the boys race with a time of 16:19.7.

Sartell’s Ryan Fernholz finished in 10th (16:58.6) and qualified for the state meet. Cory Rouw finished 13th (17:06.8) and Max Webb finished 14th (17:10.7) to lead St. Cloud Tech, but didn’t qualify for state.

Matthew Lundstrom (16:19.7) from Detroit Lakes, Tyler Moore (16:21.2) from Little Falls, Nadir Yusuf (16:38.9) and Ian Thompson (16:40.5) from Willmar, Luke Lahr (16:43.0) from Becker, Elijah Herrick (16:46.5) from Moorhead and Andrew Mergen (17:03.8) from Monticello all advanced to state individually.

In the girls race, Megan Hasz (13:41.6) and Bethany Hasz (13:49.6) of Alexandria finished in first and second place to lead the pack.

Sartell’s Mackenzie Dockendorf took seventh (14:59.9) to qualify for state. Vera Lindhorst took 19th (15:37.4) for Tech, but didn’t qualify for state.

Moorhead’s Mallori Johnson (15:05.0), Mackenzie Kelly (15:13.2) and Lexi Maddux (15:14.5) and Monticello’s Patty Bray (15:18.2) and Anna Fasen (15:23.4) all advanced to state individually.

SECTION 5A MEET

MILACA – Connor Schank of Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted won the boys race (16:16) and will represent the Lakers at the state meet.

Foley senior Brandon Tschida will make his debut in the state meet after finishing in seventh place (17:30).

Mora and Glencoe-Silver Lake finished first and second, respectively, and move on to the state meet.

The girls race was won by Elizabeth Schlafke of Annandale (15:15), who led the Cardinals to a first-place finish as a team with 36 points.
