Mounds View (MN)
Without a doubt, Mounds View was playing the long game this fall, and it appears to be paying off. The MSHSL State Championships was only the sixth meet their varsity squad competed in (in fact, they ran just one race in the entire month of September, in which they finished just seven points behind Edina), and they very nearly came away with a State title. Their raw times (they own the best team average in the meet with 15:47 with a 1-5 split of 37 seconds) certainly suggest they are a national contender, and their head-to-head win over Wayzata at State will look very good if they wind up in the wild card pool. Whether or not they can earn one of the coveted top-two spots is going to likely come down to keeping that spread as minimal as possible in the crowded Championship field, as even just a seven-second improvement from their fifth runner at State would have put them in front of Edina for the State Championship.
