Athlete to Watch: Waseca's Marcus Hansen

---

What are your expectations for this upcoming outdoor track and field season?
For my expectations; I have been putting in a lot of work in the past two off-season, and with the disappointment of last season I want to make the most of this one and set extremely high goals for myself. Like going into my junior season, this season I will be ranked as the top thrower in the state for both events. This year more than ever I will be working to sweep 1st in both events at the Hamline Elite Meet and at the state meet. I also believe, with all of my past successes, that I will be a competitor for Mr. Track and Field, and will be working really hard to put myself in the foreground for that award. I also will be trying to push myself harder than ever this season to make up for the missed marks of last season. My biggest goal this season is to set records at the local and state level. I see those records set by people before me as competitors, and they push me just as hard to get better as the people present in the ring.

What have you been up to since we last saw you competing in track and field?

I have been spending a lot of time, in this extended off-season, training, working out, and focusing on my recruiting. Although, I will say these were all very challenging due to the present circumstances.
You are the top returning throwers in the state this season, how does that affect your expectations for yourself?
You are the only returning participant from the Class AA shot put and discus state competition events in 2019, how does that affect your expectations at state this year?
Being the top returning thrower and the only returning state participant from 2019 doesn't change anything for me. Even though I would be the top thrower in the state there is one person I will never be able to beat and that's myself. I will always keep training to get better and better, but I don't think there is a point where I could be content staying at.
You are committed to play football at Bemidji State University, how did you arrive at that decision? Did you consider doing track and field collegiately?

My recruiting process was anything but simple. It took me months to decide whether I wanted to do track or football at the collegiate level. In April I thought I thought I had made a decision to do track at the University of Minnesota, but with the potential loss of their program, they didn't seem like a viable option. After this my recruiting adventure essentially restarted, and I needed to reevaluate my decision of track or football. In a month or so I came to the conclusion of football; basically, it came down to which one would I miss more.  After a few visits to Bemidji, I fell in love with the campus and the coaches, which made my decision all the more simple.
