Minnesota T&F State Meet Day 2 Recap - Class A

Class A Girls Recap

4x800m

The Luverne girls came into the meet with the 4th fastest qualifying time, and the fastest time in the state from their sub-section meet. They cruised to victory at state with a time of 9:34.64 to beat out the second-place finishers Minnewaska who clocked a 9:45.04. They were able to eclipse their state-best time and become the only Class A team in the state under 9:40.

On the last handoff, Luverne and Minnewaska were in a dead heat. On the handoff, the two last girls for each team accidentally ccollided and the baton was knocked out of the Minnewaska runner's hand. The baton then flew up in the air, bounced on the track, and ricocheted directly back into the runner's hand. It ended up not mattering too much in the long run, as Luverne easily won.

100m Hurdles

Shaina Zinter has been the favorite in the 100 hurdles all season long, and she didn't disappoint at the state meet en route to a win with a time of 14.29. That is easily a new PR for Zinter as her previous PR was 14.68 set earlier this season.

Her time of 14.29 is a new Class A state meet record, surpassing the time of 14.80 from Kara Hedin of Dassel-Cokato in 1996. Her time is also tied for the 8th best 100m hurdles performance of all-time in Minnesota. Zinter will have her senior season still, to challenge Karina Joiners state record of 13.94.

Nyalaam Jok was the runner-up today with a time of 14.77. That was the only other performance under 15 seconds in Class A all season.

300m Hurdles

Zinter also cruised past the competition in the 300m hurdles to become a state champion for the second time today. She finished with a time of 43.51 to handily beat Emma Borowicz who finished with a time of 45.16.

100m

Going into the 100m final at state, the best time in the state belonged to Lindsey Root with a time of 12.46. By the end of the race, that state best had been obliterated by three girls. Anisa Thompson finished first with a time of 12.23, Cassia Cady finished in second with a time of 12.25, and Ellie Sonju finished in third with a time of 12.37.

200m

Anisa Thompson completed the double and won the 200m title alongside her 100m title. She ran a time of 25.46 to just edge out Ellie Sonju who finished second with a time of 25.65. That is the same exact time Thompson posted to win the same event at the 2019 state meet.

High Jump

Nyalaam Jok was already one of the best high jumpers in state history with her jump of 5' 10". At the state meet, she broke through that barrier with a jump of 6' 0"!!

With her jump of 6' 0", she set several records. She tied the all-time state record set by Madison Schmidt in 2019. She also broke the Class A state meet record of 5' 9" that she previously shared with Brianna Polus.

Triple Jump

We had a historic triple jump performance from Maggie Larson today. Larson came out of the meet today with a state championship and a new PR of 40' 10.5". Her jump is now the 3rd best jump all-time in Minnesota. She is only behind Allyson Weiss and Jordan Helgren all-time.

She set a new Class A state meet record with her jump. This is the second triple jump title in a row for Larson after she won the state title in 2019 with a jump of 38' 7". She also finished 2nd at the 2018 state meet.
