Over the years we have seen some very talented crops of Minnesota girls 800m runners run in the same season. From Ruby Stauber, to Tess Misgen, and now to Zoie Dundon and Sydney Drevlow. Out of all the talented Minnesota girls 800m classes of the last decades, this year might be the best crop of returning 800m runners we have ever seen.
Returning this year we have the following girls:
RANK | TIME | ATHLETE/TEAM | GRADE | MEET DATE PLACE |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 2:10.54 | Burnsville High School | 2022 | |
2 | 2:11.38 | Hopkins High School | 2025 | |
3 | 2:12.67 | Edina High School | 2024 | |
4 | 2:13.54 | Wayzata High School | 2023 | |
4 | 2:13.54 | Rosemount High School | 2023 |
All of the girls above return this season, and all but Zoie Dundon will return next spring also. Currently, the girls rank 8th, 17th, 36th, and tied for 58th all-time for Minnesota girls in the 800m in the order shown above. To break into the top 11 all-time in Minnesota you only have to run a 2:11 or faster, and given the talent here and their times from last season, all the five girls above can do that! (Dundon already did).
What they have going against them is that no two Minnesota girls runners have ever run sub 2:11 in the same season. What they do have going for them is that four of those girls may meet each other at state, and that they will all have chances to race each other at regional and championship level meets.
When they did run against each other in the 800m last season, they posted the following times:

Ten of the top 800m performances as shown above/below were from meets where several of the top five girls returners this season raced each other in 2021. Those ten performances made up 10 of the top 15 times in 2021.

Given the elite competition when they race each other, and the number of opportunities they will have to race each other again, who knows how low on the clock they can push each other in 2022.
