Ward, Schafer compete at NCAA Championships

DELEWARE, Ohio-- Augsburg College track and field teammates Nick Ward (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Matthew Schafer (SO, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) competed in the preliminary races of the men's 100-meter dash and 800-meter run respectively at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships Friday evening at Ohio Wesleyan University. Neither Augsburg competitor was able to advance to the event finals which will be held Saturday afternoon.

In his first-ever appearance at the NCAA Championships, Ward clocked a time of 11.07 seconds to record a 20th-place finish in the event. As one of the top sprinters in Augsburg school history, Ward will end his career having earned seven MIAC titles, 12 All-MIAC honors and eight All-MIAC honorable-mention honors, to go along with eight school records.

Schafer just missed a personal-best time in the 800, as he finished the race with a time of 1:52.56 to record an 18th place finish. In his track career, Schafer has earned two All-MIAC and four All-MIAC honorable-mention honors. Schafer also holds the school record in the indoor 800 (1:56.24) while also part of a school record in the outdoor sprint medley relay (3:27.07).
