Mississippi state champion Kate Mattox of Starkville stormed through the field and mud at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic for a 18:37 5K victory. Next to follow Mattox through the chute were Missouri runners Chelsea Drum (2nd, 18:42) of Jackson and Kayla Funkenbusch (3rd, 18:44) of Rock Bridge.
Funkenbusch also lead her Missouri top ranked squad Rock Bridge to victory as well to put themselves just ahead of Huntsville with 106 points.
It was a clean sweep of individual champions for the state of Mississippi with Curt Knight of Jackson Academy able to pull away from last year's Brooks Twilight champ Camden Barrett (2nd, 16:08) of West Plains in Missouri as well as Andrew Tankersley (3rd, 16:12) of Boerne Champion in Texas for a winning time of 16:05. Barrett did not get to celebrate a second straight individual win in Memphis, but did enjoy a resounding win with his West Plains teammates for the team trophy with their tally of 45 points putting them well ahead of the distant runner-ups from in-state rival Rock Bridge (2nd, 114 pts).
