Adnew Stueven Hates To Lose And Does So Rarely

Adnew Stueven, Class of 2019 - Northome High School (Northome/Kelliher/Blackduck)

What are all your personal records?  What State Meet competitions have you been in, and what were your results?

800 - 1:59.25

1600 - 4:31.45
3200 - 9:55.63
Long Jump - 19'0.5"

I have been to State in 2016, 2017, and 2018. The first two years I ran the 3200m and 1600m, and last year I ran the 1600m and 800m.

How did you first get involved with track? Do you do, or have you done, any other sports?

I loved running and I figured I might as well compete. I have been doing three sports ever since 6th grade - football, basketball, and track.

What is your favorite or most memorable competition you've ever been in?

Definitely the first year I ran at State and ran under 10 minutes in the 2-mile.

Tell me about one of your favorite track-related memories.

I always love doing speed work during practice, even though my thing is distance. I like showing up the sprinters, haha.

Who are some of your favorite athletes to compete against?

I don't know if there's anyone in particular I like to race. I just like it when there is someone that can go with me or someone that I can stay with.

Who are some people that have been most helpful to you in your athletic career, and how have they helped you?

My parents do everything for me and they've given me everything I need to succeed in my athletics. Also my coaches for all three sports - it's great to have three different types of coaches because they all have different perspectives and you feed off what they are telling you to do, and they're their to help you get better.

Who might we find cheering for you at competitions?

I have made an impact on most of the meets I go to, and a lot of people are cheer me on even from other schools. Coaches for other schools, fans from other schools, and of course my own teammates and coaches and family cheer me on too.

What is a challenge you have had to face as an athlete? How did you overcome it?

I hate losing, so if I get beat in a race, I'm harder on myself than anyone else is. So I have to work harder and need to stop getting beat.

What are your main goals for this track season?

My goal for track this year is to break the school record for the mile and run it under 4:30.

What are you and your teammates looking forward to the most this year?

What we are most looking forward to this year are definitely the meets because this is my last year and I want to take in and soak up as much as I can before it's all gone.

Do you have any post-graduation plans?

I plan to go to college somewhere in Minnesota to either run track or play ball and major in sports education.

Do you have any rituals, routines, or superstitions either on or off the track?

I always buy a box of zebra cakes for the season and I eat two of them before I run.

When not doing anything track-related, what might we find you doing?

I love to shoot hoops whenever I can.

What advice would you give to younger athletes, or athletes just starting out in track?

Take it seriously, because when you get older, your going to look back on your times and your work ethic and say to yourself, "What could've I done if I didn't slack off my first couple years?"

Do you have any specific running advice or tips that you would like to share?

People tell you to draft other races, but I don't like that because that puts you out of your rhythm. You are the only one that knows your body, run your race not anybody else's.

Tell me one bizarre fact about yourself.

I do not like BBQ.
