Some Reflections From Sydney Binsfield

Sydney Binsfield, Class of 2019 - Proctor High School

What are all your personal records?  What State Meet competitions have you been in, and what were your results?

My 5k pr is an 18:55 and 3200 pr is an 11:45. I ran in the 2018 State Track Meet and placed 12th. I also ran in the 2018 State Cross Country Meet and placed 13th.

How did you first get involved with track and XC, and what other sports have you done?

I started cross country in seventh grade because I loved to run. Before that, I rode horses and played soccer. I also am on a mountain bike team in the summer and Nordic Ski in the winter.

What is your favorite or most memorable competition you've ever been in?

The most memorable competition I have ever been in was the 2018 section track meet because I made it to State and it had the the loudest team members/fan section.

Tell me a standout non-competition-related memory from your athletics career.

After the 2018 State Cross Country, meet we went to IKEA for dinner.

Who are some of your favorite athletes to compete against?

My favorite athletes to compete with are Ava Hill, Ashlee Siegle, and my teammate Annika Voss who graduated last year.

Who are some people that have been most helpful to you in your athletic career, and how have they helped you?

My Coach Lowell Harnell taught me how to be a fierce competitor, while my coaches Glen Gilderman and Jim Vos have helped me through some of the lows in my athletic career.

Who might we find cheering for you at competitions?

You will find my die hard fan Mary Binsfield (mom) and my friends Amber Mcrae, Zach Coughlin, and Jacob Veil, along with the rest of the track team as well.

What is a challenge, or challenges, you have had to face as an athlete? How did you overcome it?

I have struggled with many injuries and have had to sit out seasons of my sports. They have taught me that each injury is another learning experience and another setup for a good comeback.

What are your main goals for this track season?

My main goals for this track season include staying healthy and running each race with a smile on my face.

What are you and your teammates looking forward to the most this year?

We are looking forward to having fun relay teams and more memories.

Do you have any post-graduation plans?

After graduation I plan on attending Grand Valley State and running with their program there.

Do you have any rituals, routines, or superstitions either on or off the track?

I like to lay on the ground before races and do absolutely nothing.

When not doing anything track-related, what might we find you doing?

You might find me hiking or laying in a hammock.

What advice would you give to younger athletes, or athletes just starting track?

Make sure to have fun. If you are not having fun, then what is the point?

Do you have any specific running advice or tips that you would like to share?

Cross training can sometimes make you more fit than running!

Tell me one bizarre fact about yourself.

I believe matching socks are bad luck
