Athlete to Watch: Wayzata Jumper Mara Braun

---

What are your expectations for this upcoming outdoor track and field season?

Growing up I was always involved in other sports so I thought joining track would be a fun, new experience. It was something new to do for the spring season too.
You decided to focus on the long jump and triple jump. how did you decide to do jumps instead of other events?
My dad did the jumping events in high school and he wanted me to try them. I'm not a big runner so jumping was a good alternative. I knew it would help a ton with basketball too.
Your only track season was in 2019 and you made quite the impact, making it to state for both long jump and triple jump, what were your expectations going into that season?
Honestly, I went into it totally open-minded. It was a new sport with a whole new technique I had to learn. Luckily I picked up on it pretty fast, and I just tried to improve every meet.
With last year's track season canceled, how did you stay in shape for track and basketball?

AAU season is during track season so I'm able to stay in shape for both. Not having a track season was a bummer, but I was still able to play AAU with some precautions.

What is your favorite event to compete in, long jump or triple jump?
That's a tough question because I enjoy both a lot. Triple jump is fun because it's very different from any event, and a lot harder. There's a lot of detail that goes into it which I like.
What has been your favorite track and field memory so far?
My favorite meet was definitely true team state! Competing against each school as a whole was cool. Being able to score points for the team as an individual, makes it that much more competitive.
You are the top-ranked returning long jumper in the state, how does that affect your expectations for this track and field season?
Coming back to track with only one year under my belt will be a good opportunity. I still have a lot to learn! I've pretty much got the basics down, now I can focus on details.
You are committed to playing basketball at the University of Minnesota, how did you come to that decision? Did you ever consider doing track and field collegiately?
Basketball has always been my #1 sport. It's been my passion since I was a kid, and being able to stay home comes with a ton of opportunity.
