Future Heptathlon Star? Shaina Zinter Strives on the Track

---

Concordia Academy's Shaina Zinter is one of the top all-around athletes in the state of Minnesota. Last year she held the state's top marks in the 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles, and was the Class A leader in the 100m, 200m, and long jump on top of her state-leading marks. Alongside those impressive marks, she was the Class A State Champion in the 100m and 300m hurdles.

To finish off her track and field season last year, she competed at The Outdoor Nationals in the heptathlon where she placed fifth overall.

We at Milesplit Minnesota recently caught up with Zinter to talk about her upcoming senior track and field season, her commitment to the University of Wisconsin, and what the future holds for her.

The last track and field season for you was one of the best all-around seasons in state history. How do you plan to improve on that this spring?
I plan to stay healthier than last season so that I don't have any gaps in training and can improve my personal bests as much as possible.

What are your goals for this track and field season
I would like to break some records and win four state events. It would also be fun to try to win the meet in points.

Outside of Minnesota, do you have any goals to compete in national meets?
I am deciding whether I want to go to either the outdoor national NSAF meet or the U20 meet in the heptathlon. I would like to do the 400h as well, but don't know if that schedule will be an overload.

You recently committed to the University of Wisconsin, how did you come to that decision? and what do you want to accomplish while at Wisconsin?
I came to this decision because their multi coach, Nate Davis, is an Olympic coach that has a plan to help me improve and he reminds me of my current coach. I believe I can reach my potential in the heptathlon at Wisconsin and hopefully reach my lofty goals. I hope to go to the NCAA championships during my college career.

Are you planning on competing in the heptathlon at Wisconsin? If so, how do you plan to train before then to accomplish your goals?
Yes, I will compete in the multis at Wisconsin. Before this, I plan to conquer high jump, which I haven't spent as much time practicing as the other events.

What has your training been like to prepare for the track season? After my high school Volleyball season ended, I started training with Ryan Koch twice a week on a curved, push treadmill.  I have been training with Ryan since my freshman year, and he got me started in the heptathlon (Ryan coached his wife, Heather Miller-Koch at the Olympics in the heptathlon). I also have a class at school where I can lift and practice my events. There are a few USATF indoor meets that I've been able to compete at to prepare for outdoor.

Other than your own teammates, who are some of your favorite athletes to compete against?
I really enjoy competing against Ava Cinnamo (we train together during the offseason and she is the top hurdler in AA), Bryanna Craig (we've gone against each other three times in the heptathlon and she's currently the top high school multi).

What has been your favorite moment of your high school track and field career so far?
My favorite moment of my high school career was during the section 4x400 my freshman year. I was the anchor and once I got the baton, I got to chase down a girl who had a sizeable lead. Everyone was yelling at me to go faster. It was a photo finish where I luckily beat Blake in the final step. My teammates were thrilled that we won and got the school record!

Tell me one bizarre fact about yourself.
I actually enjoy the sprint endurance workouts. After getting in a car accident on the way to training, I didn't want to miss my workout of 15 repeat 200s.
