The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) establishes the standards for qualifying for the state track and field championships. An athlete or relay team must finish in the top 2 in the sectional championships to qualify for state, OR they can qualify by meeting a time/distance standard set by the state.

This standard is designed to allow more than 2 athletes to qualify from a section if they appear capable of finishing high at the state meet. They are computed by averaging the 5th place mark at the state meet for the past five years, so they are quite difficult to meet.
