The second top 50 recruiting update for the Class of 2024 boys is officially out from MileSplit.
We ranked our athletes based on a tiered rating system, current MileSplit50, and MileSplit track and field and cross country rankings, state records, historical results, and performances over national competition.
You can find previous rankings (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024) at the bottom of the page.
With two full years (or more) under their belts, we've been able to look into the top boys as they enter their junior season.
As of now, these athletes demonstrated to be the top of the class, which is full of talent. Checking in at #35 after being previously unranked is Apple Valley's Dwyne Smith Jr.

Smith was a standout sophomore last spring in Minnesota finishing 2nd in the 400m at the state meet and 7th in the 200m in Class AAA. During his sophomore season, Dwyne ran the 3rd fastest 200m time all-time and the fastest 400m time all-time by a Minnesota sophomore boy.
MN Sophomore Boys All-Time 400m Times
Runner | 400m Time | Year |
Dwyne Smith Jr. (Apple Valley) | 47.55 | 2022 |
Tom Coles (Hutchinson) | 48.0 | 1977 |
Michael Smith (Wayzata) | 48.38 | 2012 |
Nathan Roese (East Ridge) | 48.76 | 2011 |
Calvin Clark (Henry Sibley) | 48.88 | 2009 |
Next up for Dwyne would be the junior record of 47.59 set by Randy Melbourne in 1993 and the state record of 47.18 set by Quinn Evans in 2007. Both records seem to be in serious jeopardy for the talented junior.
All-Time Minnesota Boys 400m Records
Runner | 400m Time | Year |
Quinn Evans (Mounds View) | 47.18 | 2007 |
Ramy Ayoub (Farmington) | 47.34 | 2022 |
Michael Smith (Wayzata) | 47.40 | 2012 |
Genuine Matthews (St. Francis) | 47.42 | 2017 |
Dwyne Smith Jr. (Apple Valley) | 47.55 | 2022 |
One might wonder how low that record might be able to go at the pace Dwyne set in 2022. He was a very consistent 400m runner all season long and peaked at the right time during the summer. He made drastic strides going from a 50.50 PR in 2021 to a 47.55 in 2022. Another leap in 2023 would put him in some historic company all-time in Minnesota.
This spring Dwyne will be one of the top returners on the track for all his events. He ranks as the #13 100m returner, the #5 200m returner, and the #1 400m returner.
We can't wait to see what he brings to 2023.
