On the boys' side, Ankeny's Tim Sindt ran an excellent race, breaking the 16-minute barrier with a 15:58 to take the win over Camden Cox of Ankeny Centennial. The race was Sindt's first 5K under 16 minutes after running a PR of 16:00.8 at the State meet last year. The battle up front was between the two Ankeny schools, with Valley pack-running close behind. Centennial took the win in the 11-12 race with a team score of 34, followed by Ankeny in 2nd at 48 points, and Valley rounding out the top 3 with 61 points.
In the 9-10 race, the battle was between Ankeny Centennial and Valley up front, with Centennial freshman Gabe Vicker in the top spot with a time of 17:41, followed by Valley's Carter Owen in 17:49. The team scores were tight, but Valley managed to edge out Centennial with team scores of 31 and 36 respectively. Thomas Gauley of Pella made a huge jump in fitness this summer, running a big PR of 17:49, nearly a minute better than his previous best, to finish 7th in the 11-12 race.
When the two races are combined, the team scores came out tight for second between Ankeny and Valley. Overall, Ankeny Centennial would have won with a team score of 29 (2, 4, 5, 8, 10). To finish second, Ankeny would have scored 58 (1, 3, 16, 17, 21). And to round out the top 3, Valley would have finished just one point behind with a tight pack finishing in places 9, 11, 12, 13, and 14 (not to mention 15th as well for their 6th runner). Check out how the top 50 individuals would have placed overall below.
