In today's world, making yourself stand out without appearing as if you're drawing undue attention to yourself is an important skill to have. That's probably no less true with trying to find a college track and field scholarship offer than it is anywhere else. So, how do you pull it off?
In this final installment of the series, I try to touch on some issues that have been brought to my attention during the process of writing these articles. Rather than try to rewrite this information into the original articles, I've included it in a "loose ends" kind of article here at the end.
The choices you make between now and August will have a great deal to do with how successfully you start out as a college athlete. Here are several things you want to give some attention to.
Most prospective student-athletes who go on a visit don't come with nearly enough questions to ask. Here are some questions you may want to think about asking.
Don't feel badly about trying to "size up" the coaches during the recruiting process; they're doing the same with you.
The implications of signing a National Letter of Intent are often not well understood, but they should be. It is a legal document that is binding on both parties.
For athletes who find themselves in the recruiting process, there are few--if any--sources of more confusion than the rules surrounding visits and coach contacts. I admit that I sometimes have trouble sorting it all out myself.
My grandfather's answer to the question posed in the title of this article would be to expect none and be delighted in what you end up with. There's a good deal of wisdom wrapped up in that answer, but it probably doesn't reflect a realistic assessment of why you took a second glance at this article.
It's often more difficult than you'd expect to get noticed by the college programs you want to take note. A little understanding of the process goes a long way.

Grant Krieger (The Blake School) has verbally committed to Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. He will compete as a pole vaulter and decathlete for the Demon Deacons. In a recent conversation with Grant, he indicated that the first factor in his desire to go South for college was competing against Southern athletes at the national level. “I was always jealous of the Texas kids I competed against at Nationals because they could train all year without worrying about the weather.”
Grant Krieger of the Blake School verbally committed to Wake Forest this past weekend. Grant will compete as a pole vaulter and decathlete at Wake Forest (emphasis on the pole vault). Grant also considered Missouri, North Carolina, and Oral Roberts.

RACE HIGHLIGHTS: Anna Rohrer of Mishawaka, Ind., and Jake Leingang of Bismark, N.D., won the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships (FLCCC) Midwest Regional today. The girls’ race was dominated by a tight group of runners, with the lead exchanging several times. At the two-mile mark, Rohrer made her move to take the lead and never looked back, breaking the course record in 16:54. (The previous course record was held by Claire Durkin of Columbus, Ohio at 17:01 in 2007.) Taylor Werner of Bloomsdale, Mo., placed second in 17:06, and Maria Hauger of Shakopee, Minn., placed third in 17:07. Hauger is a two-time FLCCC National Finalist In the boys’ race, Nicholas Raymond of Erie, Mich., was in the lead at the one-mile and two-mile marks. At 2.5 miles, Leingang, a senior from Bismarck High School, and Sam Wharton of Tipp City, Ohio, surged ahead of Raymond to battle for the coveted first place spot. Leingang claimed the title in 14:56, and Wharton placed second in 14:56. Raymond finished in 15:02, placing third. Leingang is a two-time FLCCC National Finalist.

Kenosha, Wis., November 20, 2012– Maria Hauger will compete at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships Midwest Regional race on Saturday, Nov. 24 at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis. Maria Hauger of Shakopee, MN, returns to compete against some of the best runners in the region for a coveted spot in the national finals. Hauger, a senior, placed 21st in last year’s national race.

The St. Cloud Cathedral boys (Class A) and the Stillwater Area boys (Class AA) are both in the hunt for their second consecutive titles. Three individual champions also return in search of more gold. Senior Maria Hauger of Shakopee is looking to become the first Class AA runner to win four consecutive titles, while junior Clare Flanagan is seeking her second consecutive Class A crown. Esko senior Marisa Shady, who took top honors in Class A in 2010, also returns. She is looking to improve on last year’s third-place showing. The girls run a 4,000-meter course. The boys run a 5,000-meter course.
