PERHAM (3)
Two time defending state champ Perham will have work to do in their quest for a historic three-peat in 2019. The Yellowjackets will need to replace runners one and three from last year's team but they feature rising freshman star Liz Birkeland (19:14.1 PR) and a 1-5 pack who's potential average time will remain among the best in the state. Freshmen Quincy Anderson (19:57) and Mya Morris (19:58) have already broke 20 minutes and have state meet races under their belts. Fellow 9th grader Lauryn Rustad (20:12) was the Jackets fifth runner at state last year. Junior Emily Vanwatermulen has been a consistent scorer for Perham and has run 19:29.5 in her career. Despite some unknowns, the history of the program speaks for itself in athlete development and the returning top five depth (only team with four, sub-20 returners) is already among the best in Class A. There are challengers to the throne but the Jackets will be formidable again this fall.
