MONDAY 8/26

MILACA EARLY BIRD

BOYS RECAP: Mora posted a strong performance in their team victory with three in the top ten and all five in the top 18 overall. Big Lake freshman Kade Layton (17:22.7) made a splash in taking the individual title ahead of Mora's Cooper Lennox (17:32.3). Big Lake also got a boost from eighth grader Owen Layton (18:22.0) who finished third and gives the Lakers a lot to build on going forward this season. While Milaca does not ofter a fast track on a rainy wet day, Mora gets credit for a nice win to build momentum early in the season.

SCORES: Mora (47), Saint Cloud Cathedral (71), Foley (82)

BOYS VARSITY RESULTS

GIRLS RECAP: Chisago Lakes took the team title over Mora in a mild surprise despite running just five athletes. (Mora's projected no. 1 Peyton Oslin did not race) Milaca's Brittany Hansen took the individual victory in 21:16.7. Mora's Tess Houglum and Eva Holmgren went 2-3 and were ahead of Chisago through the fourth spot but didn't get a fifth across until 41 runners while the Wildcats had just a 51 second split in their victory.

LAKEVIEW INVITATIONAL

FULL MEET RESULTS

BOYS RECAP: Redwood Valley pulled off a narrow win over Marshall, with Canby-Minneota not too far back in third. Redwood Valley gained low numbers in their top three including meet winner Jayson Peyerl (17:40) and that was enough in a small meet field to overcome a nearly 3:30 1-5 split. Marshall had better fourth and fifth runners but the low digits up front were the deciding factor. Marshall was led by second place finisher Zach Matzner (17:52) with Canby-Minneota's top runner Blake Stoks finishing third in 18:32.

SCORES: Redwood Valley (39), Marshall (42), Canby-Minneota (58)

GIRLS RECAP: Canby-Minneota opened Sophomore Grace Drietz opened her season with a first place time of 19:30, over a minute ahead of second place finisher Maddie Lesage of Redwood Valley. Canby-Minneota earned the team victory with four in the top ten despite a 1-5 split of over 6:30. Redwood Valley had three in the top ten with a lower split but in a smaller field, the lower numbers up front meant more to Canby-Minneota's score than the lower number in Redwood's fifth spot.

SCORES: Canby-Minneota (33), Redwood Valley (42), Yellow Medicine East (104)

MORRIS INVITATIONAL

FULL MEET RESULTS

BOYS RECAP: No. 4 coaches ranked LQPV claimed a narrow win over no 2. coaches ranked West Central in the team race despite WCA going 1-2 individually. West Central Seniors Jacob Bright (16:22) and Jack Van Kempen (17:19) were the top two across the line but LQPV had the next three along with their no. 4 man running in the top ten to earn the victory. The LQPV split of just over a minute proved to be the deciding factor that overcame Bright's excellent early-season result that was nearly a minute better than second place on the day.

SCORES: Lac qui Parle Valley (32), West Central Area (36), Melrose (120)

GIRLS RECAP: The Rocori girls used a razor thin 17 second team split and perfect score to run away from the field. Sophomore Ava Larson won the meet with a time of 21:20 and it was just a few ticks back to the Spartans fifth runner, freshman Selma Dingman, who was 16 seconds in front of the sixth place finisher, Teagen Nelson (21:51) of West Central. West Central appeared to have several of their top runners in the JV race including sophomore Lexi Bright who won the 2500m race but has been section 6A runner-up the last two years and previously placed in the top 40 at state.

CENTRAL MINNESOTA RIVER RUN

BOYS RECAP: Emmet Anderson of Staples-Motely opened his season with a solid 16:15.8 and the home team put six inside the top ten to earn a dominant victory. The Cardinals no. 2 man Hunter Klimek was second in 16:33.8. Crosby-Ironton senior Tucker Ringhand was third break up a run of two more Staples-Motley runners in the top five. While Staples-Motley ran away from everyone they did have a 2:51 split back to their fifth man at 18:20 but it was all about the win on home turf on Monday.

SCORES: Staples Motley (17), Detroit Lakes (54), Fergus Falls (99)

BOYS VARSITY RESULTS

GIRLS RECAP: Staples appears to have found a replacement for the departed Kira Sweeney (Wadena-Deer Creek) as the Cardinals went 1-2 with eighth grader Kyanna Burton (19:56.0) and new cross country performer, freshman Aften Robinson (20:31.5) leading to the team victory. Despite a two minute split Staples-Motley put all five in the top ten. Fergus Falls junior Emily Nuss was third in 20:47.6 and Staples-Motley freshman Ashley Robben gave her team third runner under 21 minutes in fourth place. Menahga seventh grader Anjalie Aho posted a 21:24.7 to take fifth place in her first career varsity 5k.
