Mafe stayed close to home when he committed to the University of Minnesota back in 2017. That same year, he also competed in the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons in Minnesota. That year, the uber-athletic Mafe competed in the 110m hurdles, the high jump, triple jump, and shot put.

His best event that year was the high jump. He competed at seven meet that year in the high jump and had a personal best of 6' 7" and competed at the 2017 MSHSL State Championships where he placed 6th overall with a jump of 6' 4".

Overall at the end of his senior season outdoors, he ranked 47th in Minnesota in the shot put, T-6th in the high jump, and 50th in the triple jump. Not bad at all for a football-focused athlete.

Overall in his track and field career, he dabbled in 10 different track and field events, competed at two-state meets, and won five track meet events.
