Johnson only briefly dabbled in track and field during his junior year at Eden Prairie, but in the two track meets he did compete in, he showed great potential. During those two meets, the Lake Conference Relays and the Section 7AAA True Team meet, Johnson competed in the shot put, discus, and high jump.

With likely very little practice, and just coming in with his athletic ability, he was able to post an impressive 5' 8" high jump mark, and throw over 90 feet in the discus and over 40 feet in the shot put.
