Throwback: David Roddy, From State Champion to the NBA

---

Roddy just completed his first full regular season in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies. He played in 70 games averaging 6.7 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. The Grizzlies secured the #2 seed in the Western Conference.

We wish our former state champion David Roddy the best of luck in the NBA playoffs!

(Original story from June, 2022) When former Breck high school standout and Colorado State University's David Roddy was drafted to the NBA on Friday, it flashed on the screen that he was a former track and field athlete. While most people probably didn't know that, we in Minnesota did as Roddy was the Class A 2019 MSHSL State Discus Champion.

While he is clearly a better basketball player than a track and field athlete, he had a record-setting career for Breck High school. Roddy qualified for the state meet 5 times (2x Discus, 3x Shot Put), won 5 Section 5A titles, is one of just three individual boys state champions for Breck, and holds both the school records for the discus and shot put.

Roddy won the 2019 Class A State Title in the discus with a throw of 162' 5" to beat out then-freshman Ethan Fischer who had a throw of 158' 10". Roddy also finished second in the shot put at state that year with a throw of 55' 9.25" to fall just 6.5 inches short of the state title.

Roddy chose to play college basketball at Colorado State University where he played for three years. While there he was the 2022 Mountain West Player of the Year, a John Wooden Award finalist, and a Sports Illustrated Third Team All-American.

Roddy was drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies with the 23rd overall pick of the 2022 NBA draft.
