Juriad Hughes Jr., a junior at Irondale High School, earned a spot to compete for the U.S. in the 100m in Puerto Rico for the Pan American U20 Championships in August, with a 2nd place finish in the long jump at the 2023 USATF U20 Track and Field Championships.
Hughes Jr. jumped 24' 11" to finish behind San Jose States Elias Ajamu Reed and to earn one of the two long jump spots on the Team USA U20 team.

This is Juriad's third time jumping 24' 11" this season, after jumping that same mark at the MSHSL Section 5AAA Track and Field Championships and the Nike Indoor Nationals.
With his jumps of 24' 11", he has set both the Minnesota indoor and outdoor records for the long jump. The previous indoor record was 23' 1" set by Josh Peter in 2016 and the previous outdoor record was 24' 9.25 set by Von Shepard in 1982.
Alongside breaking the Minnesota state records, Hughes Jr. set a new junior class record in Minnesota, ranked #5 nationally for the 2023 outdoor season, ranks #5 among all-performances for the class of 2024, and ranks tied for 32nd all-time for U.S. junior boys all-time.
