Primarily a soccer player until a meteoric rise as a sophomore on the track uncovered his remarkable distance running skill, Richfield's Obsa Ali only ran two years of cross country, and the first of those years he spent balancing with soccer as a dual-athlete. But those two years were incredibly memorable. He was the Section 3AA champion both years, won State as a senior after a runner-up finish as a junior, and twice finished in the top ten at Nike Cross Nationals. And as one may notice in the above photo, losing a shoe was not enough to stop him from running the fourth-fastest time in the history of the St. Olaf State Meet course. Ali is still competing for the University of Minnesota as a senior, having helped the Gophers qualify for the National Championships as a team, and qualifying as an individual for the 3000m steeplechase.
