Minnesota's Elite Squads Open Season Out-Of-State Today

PREVIEW

Columbus Catholic Invitational

Location: Wildwood Park, Marshfield, WI

Weather: Mid 60s, cloudy with a chance of storms, 7-10 MPH winds, high humidity

BOYS

Virtual Meet Projections: Wayzata 22, Stillwater 46, Whitefish Bay 102, Hudson 130

Top Individuals: Grant Price (Wayzata, 15:45) Andrew Brandt (Wayzata 15:46) Addison Stansbury (Stillwater 15:46) Zachary Miller (Wayzata, 15:48) Ethan Vargas (Stillwater 16:00)

The Skinny: Despite some recurring injury problems, Wayzata's Grant Price will be the favorite going into this historic race at Marshfield. With a 15:45 PR, and the fact that he's the defending champion, it's hard to see Price going down on Saturday, but there are a few guys who could give him a run for his money, such as his teammate Andrew Brandt, and Stillwater's Addison Stansbury, who is coming off of an extremely stellar track season. (4:19 1600, 9:27 3200) The weather forecast doesn't look to be too bad, with reasonable temperatures just in the high 60s, but the projected high humidity could definitely play a factor, but nonetheless, we should see some fast times with talent that we have in the field. As for the team competition, it's hard to see anyone taking down Wayzata, as the virtual meet has them easily winning the competition by 30 points over Stillwater. Stillwater was ranked third in the state in the preseason polls, so this will be an early opportunity for them to prove they belong with the best in the state by even finishing close to Wayzata.

GIRLS

Virtual Meet Projections: Whitefish Bay 23, La Crosse Logan (128), Pacelli (148)

Top IndividualsMarissa Ellenbecker (Edgar, 18:56), Maggie Keiper (Whitefish Bay, 19:00), Kari Herman (Osseo-Fairchild, 19:46), Kealan Mcnally (Whitefish Bay, 20:00)

The Skinny: With Wayzata and Stillwater (plus the Hudson girls) all having raced earlier this week, that leaves only the Wisconsin schools racing on Saturday. With far less depth and top-end talent than the boys, Whitefish Bay appears to be a strong favorite as their top six are all in the eleven-fastest times coming into the meet. Their top athlete Maggie Keiper will probably be battling for the win with Edgar's Marissa Ellenbecker, as those two runners are nearly a minute removed from the rest of the field.
