Who's Representing MN at Nationals?

New Balance Nationals Outdoor Day 3 - Saturday, 6/15

Hopkins Boys: Jaylen Champion, Wyatt Lubarski, Sam Leervig, and Joe Fahnbulleh
4x200 Championship Finals - 9:05am CST

The Hopkins boys 4x200 relay twice broke the all-time Minnesota record at State: first in prelims, where they dropped a 1:25.66, and again in finals, where they lowered their mark by .08. That time currently ranks them 15th in the nation.

Joe Fahnbulleh, Hopkins
Boys Championship 100m Prelims - 10:00am CST, Finals - 1:45pm CST

Joe Fahnbulleh is already the fastest boy in Minnesota history in the 100m, so there's not much left for him to prove. Interestingly, Fahnbulleh hasn't had much experience racing the 100m at high caliber meets this year. He was disqualified after false starting at the Hamline Elite Meet, and elected not to run the event at State this season. However, his 10.23 mark currently puts him at fifth in the country (all conditions) and he will be one of the favorites.

Delaney Smith, Windom
Girls Hammer Throw Emerging Elite - 12:00pm CST

Delaney Smith was a force to be reckoned with this spring, placing fifth in the discus and third in the shot in Class A. The hammer throw is not part of MSHSL track and field, so it's unclear what Smith's experience in this event is: she doesn't have any performances listed on our database. Regardless, given her versatility, she likely can hold her own against the best.

Lauren Ping, Cotter
Girls 2 Mile Championship - 3:20pm CST
Last weekend, Lauren Ping completed a spotless season in the 3200m, winning every single race, including the Hamline Elite Meet and the Class A State Championship. In fact, Ping has only lost one 3200m in her career, to state record holder Emily Covert last spring. However, Ping is the first section, so she will not be in the same race as names like Sydney Masciarelli and Kelsey Chmiel, meaning that she may have to run for time.

Isaac Basten, Buffalo
Boys 2 Mile Championship - 3:35pm CST

Isaac Basten, the Hamline Elite Meet and Class AA champion, has already cemented himself as the best 3200m runner in Minnesota. Basten's signature finishing speed propelled him to victory in both of the aforementioned races, as nobody in the state has been able to hang with the Drake commit's final 400m. We've seen Basten split the last lap in under 60 seconds, but we haven't seen his closing speed on this big of a stage before.

Hopkins Boys: Ty Bennett, Jaylen Champion, George Jackson, and Joe Fahnbulleh
4x100 Championship Prelims - 4:15pm CST, Finals - 6/16 at 3:10 CST

Hopkins also holds the Minnesota state record in the 4x100, after they ran 41.23 at their section meet, .29 better than the previous all-time record. However, they'll be looking for redemption after dropping the baton in State prelims and failing to make finals. The Royals currently sit at 46th in the nation.
