Poll: Minnesota Boys and Girls Runner of the Week

Week 2 of Championship season is over with, with all the conference meets over with! It was really hard to choose just four boys and girls for the poll this week with some amazing individual and team performances all across Minnesota. 

This poll will be for performances from October 18th to October 24th. 

Each will there will be four boys and four girls for each poll. Participants are based on the MileSplit Minnesota staff's opinions. The rest is up to you!

So without further ado, here are the polls and nominees to the runner of the week!



Daniel VanAcker has hit a new level as a senior as has shown himself as someone who can contend for the state title in a couple of weeks. VanAcker won the Suburban East Conference Championships by 6 seconds over William Skelly. He ran a new PR of 15:26.39 that is the 3rd fastest time in Minnesota this fall. 

William Skelly may not have won the Suburban East Conference Championships, but he did exceed all expectations on his way to a runner-up finish. Skelly ran a 15:32.04 to finish just behind Daniel VanAcker. This was a 42 second PR for Skelly, and his first time running a sub 16:00 5K. He finished as the #1 runner for Mounds View on their way to a conference title. 

Freshman Fanuel Wolday in just his first season of cross country is a conference champion. Wolday won the Big South Conference Championship over fellow freshman Will Ahrens with a new PR of 16:29.29. This was a 29 second PR and 1:17 lower than his first 5K this season. He has now won seven meets this season. 

Sully Anez ran the 4th fastest time by a freshman in Minnesota en route to winning the Central Lakes Conference Championships. Anez ran a new PR of 16:14.10 to beat out Vincent Kaluza by 24 seconds for the title. Anez has now won back-to-back meets. 



Molly Moening won her 6th straight St. Paul City Conference title with the narrowest of victories over Iris Guider. Moening was able to edge out Guider by 0.12 seconds for a season-best time of 17:57.50. She has now beaten Guider in 16 straight cross country meets, with this one being by far the closest.

Olivia Goebel dominated the Granite Ridge Conference Championships beating Hailee Zimpel by 52 seconds for her first conference or section win. Her time of 17:58.40 was a new personal best by 9 seconds and she has now improved her 5K time by one minute this season. 

Natasha Sortland won her sixth straight meet of the season en route to a victory at the Hiawatha Valley League Conference Championships. She ran an 18:23.80 5K to beat out 7th grader Abigail Tri by 1:42 for her 4th straight conference title. This was her third-fastest time of the season. 

Though she didn't win her conference meet, Iris Guider put together one of the most impressive performances of the season at the St. Paul City Conference Championships. She ran a 17:57.62 to finish just 0.12 seconds behind Molly Moening. That was a 13 second PR and her fastest 5K since Nike Heartland in 2019.
