Minnesotans Show-Out at USATF Indoor Championships

This past weekend was the 2023 USATF Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico for the first national level meet of the year for all track and field athletes. As usual, Minnesota's many prominent collegiate and pro athletes were competing for season bests, personal bests, and national finishes. 

Here we look at those Minnesota athletes who competed at this year's Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Birgen Nelson Breaks the Division III 60m Hurdles Record...Again

Birgen Nelson of Gustavus Adolphus did more than qualify for the 60-meter-hurdles final of the U.S. Indoor Championships on Saturday in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Nelson smashed her own NCAA Division III record with a time of 8.33 in the heats. That bettered her own 8.38 from early December. The NCAA DIII record was 8.44 before this indoor season. Nelson finished sixth in the final at 8.42, giving her five of the fastest times in NCAA DIII history.

Burns and Eidem Among Best American Pentathletes

The show was stolen by Anna Hall setting a new American Record for the Indoor Pentathlon and almost breaking the World Record, but also showing up were Lakeville South graduate Shaina Burns and Rochester Century graduate Katie Eidem

Burns finished 4th overall with 4380 points and Eidem finished 10th overall with 3975 points. Burns finished just 52 points out of the medal positions.

Trevor Otterdahl Doubles Up in Shot Put and Weight Throw

Former Rosemount standout and current North Dakota State University senior Trevor Otterdahl doubled up at the 2023 USATF Indoor Championships with matching 9th-place finishes in the shot put and weight throw. In the shot put Otterdahl threw a season-best throw of 58' 11.25". In the shot put he was the top collegiate finisher and in the weight throw he was the #2 collegiate finisher.

Maggie Ewen Wins Third USATF Indoor T&F Championships Medal of Career

An accomplished American thrower, Saint Francis graduate Maggie Ewen finished 2nd in the shot put at the 2023 U.S. Indoor Championships for her third career shot put medal at the indoor championships. Ewen finished with a throw of 63' 8.25" to finish only behind Chase Ealey. 

Ewen also competed in the weight throw where she finished 10th overall with a throw of 68' 8.75". 


Shane Streich Flashes 800m Potential at Indoor Championships

Representing the Atlanta Track Club, Waseca graduate Shane Streich finished 9th in the semi-finals at the U.S. Indoor T&F Championships with a time of 1:48.56 to just narrowly miss out on the finals. Streich has transitioned to being more of an 800m runner in the past couple years of competition. 

At the 2022 U.S. Indoor Championships, Streich finished 3rd overall with a time of 1:46.86 to win his first pro medal at a championship meet.
