Fabulous Five: 5 Performances that Stood Out Last Week

Rainna Jameson is one of our inaugural Fabulous Five for the 2023 outdoor season

---

Welcome to a new series by MileSplit Minnesota...the Fabulous Five!!

The Fabulous Five highlights five individuals each week of the 2023 Minnesota outdoor track and field season that stood out to us from the previous weeks' track and field meets.

The purpose of these five performances isn't to highlight state records or only top-ten performances. It's to highlight performances from across Minnesota that stood out in recent meet results. Any kind of result/performance is applicable.

Note: This is not a ranking of the five best performances of the week. This is a feature of five outstanding performances of our choice. There were many fantastic performances that were not highlighted in this feature.

Shay Payne Smashes PRs at Rosemount Quad

Coming into the season Shay Payne a Rosemount senior had a respectable personal best time of 12.83 in the 100m and had never run in the 200m at a meet. Now, Payne is the state leader in the 100m and ranks #32 in the 200m in Minnesota after only one meet.

Payne's time of 12.20 in the 100m was an improvement over last season's mark of 12.83 from the South Suburban Conference meet. Her PR of 0.63 seconds is the second biggest improvement by a Minnesota girl this season, only behind Hattie Anderson who improved by 0.85 seconds so far.

Jayda Wilson Vaults 11' 8" for #5 All-Time MN Girls Freshmen Best Mark

The state leader in the pole vault for Minnesota girls is Roseville's Jayda Wilson and it's not particularly close. Wilson has started off the season hot with new PRs in the 100m hurdles, long jump, and pole vault. Her pole vault mark of 11' 8" is eight inches better than MN #2 Madeline Kaufman of Eden Prairie.

While she is the state leader, Wislons mark of 11' 8" is also a historic mark that ranks #5 all-time for Minnesota freshmen girls.

Anthony Winston Becomes First MN Boy to Jump 6' 8" or Higher in High Jump Since 2021

Approximately 150 Minnesota boys have jumped 6' 8" of higher in the high jump all-time. Incredibly Anthony Winston became the first Minnesota boy to jump that height in nearly two years. The last two individuals to do that were Peyton Johnsrud in April 2021 and Jacob Ziebarth in June 2021.

Winston this year is the Minnesota state leader in the high jump with his jump of 6' 8" being three inches better than MN #2 Tyce Smith. His mark of 6' 8" is also tied for 49th nationally for the 2023 outdoor season.

Mayson Stenzel a Potential Future Star

Mayson Stenzel is a 7th-grader from Maple River who last week at his first track and field meet and the first meet of the year for Maple River, ran a time of 10:24.20 in the 3200m at the Blue Earth Area Buc Invitational to finish 1st at the meet over six junior runners.

Off the bat 10:24.20 doesn't seem like an amazing time, but it is given context!

Stenzel ran the 3200m in the fastest time by a Minnesota boys 7th-grader since Elliott McArthur in May 2018. There McArthur ran a time of 10:08.29 which currently ranks at the #5 time by a 7th-grade boy all-time. Stenzels time of 10:24.20 ranks #11 all-time after just his first race as a 7th-grader.

Stenzel also ranks #2 nationally in the 3200m for the class of 2028 only behind Tyson Manley of Florida who ranks #1 with a time of 10:21.72. Now how low can Stenzel go this season? And can he break the class record?
