MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Clay Shively of Wichita Trinity Academy came into the Roy Griak Invitational on a high after clocking the fastest 5K in Kansas state history at the Olathe Twilight.

Shively followed up that performance of 14:42.60 just two weeks ago with a title at the Roy Griak Invitational on Friday at Les Bolstad and in the process logged a new Roy Griak course record, downing a course record mark that had stood since 2013.

Shively, a Northern Arizona University commit, came into the race this year better knowing the course and race after finishing sixth year ago.

He parlayed that experience and his talent to finish with a time of 15:23.9 to hold off Minneapolis Southwest's (MN) Sam Scott for the win.

The top three finishers all broke the previous course record, which was set by Obsa Ali a decade ago with a time of 15:30.80.

Scott was the runner-up this year after finishing fifth last year and winning in 2021. Mechura improved from 31st last year to third. This comes a year after Noah Breker came within half a second of Ali's record.

Shively is the first boy from Kansas to ever win at Roy Griak and broke a streak of four state meets where a boy from Minnesota has won the individual title.

Boys runners from eight different states have now won the top boys title at Roy Griak.

Stevens Point Notches Statement Win at Roy Griak

- - -

On the team side, it was the Stevens Point boys who came away with a monumental win.

The Wisconsin-based squad scored 156 points to win by 46 points over Dowling Catholic (IA).

Stevens point was led by Aloysius Franzen, who finished fourth overall and finished with a 16:28.3 average that easily paced the field.

Stevens Point utilized its speed and depth to move up from its projected second-place finish in the pre-meet virtual meet and blew away the competition.

The team's 46-point margin of victory was the biggest win since Wayzata won by 66 points in 2014.
