Meet Previews: Conference Championships Week 2

St. Paul City Conference Championships

Boys

Virtual Meet Results: Saint Paul Highland Park (35), Saint Paul Como Park (50), Saint Paul Central (53), Saint Paul Humboldt (110)

Top Individuals: Charlie Power Theisen (15:59), Soren Sackreiter (16:50.10), Samuel Robertson (17:01.10), Sameul Linder (17:01.20)

The Skinny: Expect two things to happen on the boy's side of the St. Paul City Conference Championships; Charlier Power Theisen to dominate the field, and the Saint Paul Highland Parks boys to do the same. Theisen has a seasonal best time almost a minute better than anyone in the field, and he has won 4 meets on the season. He is the defending conference champion and has improved immensely since then.

Though they won't place any runners in the top 4 finishers, the St. Paul Highland Park boys are projected to put their five runners 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th to score 35 points for the win, with a microscopic split of 7 seconds. At the Alexandria Lions Meet of Champions, they employed this strategy for a 4th place finish behind a few Class AAA powerhouses, with a 17:14 average and a 35-second split.

Girls

Virtual Meet Results: Saint Paul Highland Park (19),  Saint Paul Central (45), Saint Paul Humboldt (94), Saint Paul Washington Tech (100)

Top Individuals: Molly Moening (18:23.20), Iris Guider (18:30.10), Delia Johnson (19:12.70), Ellie Moore (19:20.60), Luna Scorzelli (19:23.20)

The Skinny: The Saint Paul Highland girl's will win the conference for the 10th year in a row, and are projected for the same 19 points as last year, with Iris Guider playing spoiler for the perfect score of 15 points. They are projected to have their first 20 girls runners finish before any other team has their first five scorers in.

The top two girls runners in St. Paul will face off against each other for the first time this season. Both Molly Moening and Iris Guider ran at Roy Griak but in different races. This is the same matchup from last year's conference meet where Moening beat out Guider by 1 second.

This season, Moening has averaged 18:46 per 5K and Guider has averaged 18:55. Amazingly Moening has beat Guider all 15 times they have faced off against each other in their cross country careers. On average since 2019 Moening has beat Guider by about 11 seconds, but there has been a lot of close calls there with Guider being beat by only 1, 2, 3, or 4 seconds sometimes. Can this be the meet where Guider breaks that streak?
