At the 2022 Lake Conference Championships, Minnetonka's Nick Gilles competed in the 3200m where he reached a HUGE personal best time of 9:05.52 to win his 2nd straight 3200m Lake Conference title.
His time of 9:05.52 is a huge personal best time for Gilles, crushing his old personal best by about 21 seconds from the Section 7AAA True Team Meet. Gilles now holds the fastest 3200m time in Minnesota this season by 9 seconds over fellow junior Noah Breker.
So we know that 9:05 is fast and a big accomplishment for Gilles, but how does it stack up historically for Minnesota? Well, the answer would be, quite well!
Gilles's time of 9:05.52 ranks as the 15th fastest of all-time in Minnesota for the 3200m. According to the Bill Miles Rankings (MN Prep Track), his time ranks 22nd all-time, including converted 2-mile times.
Gilles's 9:05.52 ranks as the fastest 3200m run by a Minnesota boy since Jaret Carpenter ran 8:59.76 back in 2016. It is also a new Minnetonka school record, beating Matt Wilkinson's 9:15.70 from 2017.
The question now is, can Gilles take that next step and become just the 7th Minnesota boy to run a sub-9-minute 3200m?
