Nechanicky to Compete at USATF U20 XC Champs

Cross country is not quite over yet!

Wayzata's Abbey Nechanicky will run Saturday at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Virginia for the USATF U20 Cross Country Championships this weekend vying for one of the six automatic berths to the USA travel team for the World U20 XC Championships in Australia on Feb. 18.

Athletes will bump up from racing the typical 5k high school distance to contest the 6K for the junior women's race and the 8K for the junior men. The top six finishers in each field will travel to World U20s, while an additional two competitors from each race will earn selection as alternates.

Nechanicky will continue her historic cross country season that has already seen her win the MSHSL State Cross Country Championship for Class AAA, win the Heartland Regional meet, and finish 4th at Team Nationals

With the race being a 6K, Nechanicky will become just the second Minnesota girl (in our database) to run the 6K (XC) as a high schooler. The other girl to do it was Grace Ping in 2019 also at the USATF Cross Country Championships

There Ping ran a time of 21:27 to finish 4th overall and to finish as the top high school finisher.
