When asked earlier this year what goals he had for the 2023 track and field season, Hayden Bills said:
I hope to shatter both the shotput and discus state records this year
To do that, Bills would have to PR by 5 feet and 5.25 inches in the discus and 6 feet and 6.25 inches in the shot put.

Bills is the top returner in Minnesota this year for both the shot put and the discus and clearly has big goals to hold both state records for both events.
After setting the state meet record last year with his throw of 196' 2" in the discus, it seems an attainable record for Bills. The current record is held by Karl Erickson with a throw of 201' 7" and has been untouched since 2001.
The shot put seems a more daunting record for Bills as he has never thrown over 60 feet, having a PR of 59' 2.25" that ranks 75th all-time for Minnesota boys. He would have to PR by a whopping 6 feet and 6.25 inches to set the record.

Last season, Bills improved both his PRs by 26 feet 6 inches in the discus and 6 feet 1.5 inches in the shot put. More improvements like that would have him on track to break the record, but once you get to be that good of a thrower, the marginal improvements get tougher.
For example, 13 Minnesota boys have thrown over 190 feet for the discus. Only Samuel Moore, Jake Kubiatowicz, and Maxwell Otterdahl have thrown over 190 feet in the discus more than once.
