The 2023 MSHSL State Track and Field Championships have arrived and the state titles are already being won on the track and in the field. Legends are made here, stars are born, and the best of the best in Minnesota all face off for the title of state champion.

Here we look at notable times, marks, and achievements from day 3 of the MSHSL State Track and Field Championships.

7th-Grader Hartwig Wins State 400m Title

Carly Hartwig a 7th-grader for Tri-City United won the Class AA 400m title with a time of 57.16 to become the first 7th-grader to win an individual state title since Lauren Ping in 2018 and the seventh 7th-grade girl overall to win a state title.

Tayven Peterson Doubles Up as Class AA Hurdles Champion

Mora senior Tayven Peterson doubled up as the 110m and 300m hurdles champion by the slimmest of margins. In the 110m hurdles, Peterson won with a time of 14.67 just 0.01 seconds ahead of 2022 champion Corbin Herron. In the 300m hurdles, Peterson won with a time of 38.22 just 0.02 seconds ahead of Payton Kasper. Last year Peterson finished 5th in the 110m hurdles and 10th in the 300m hurdles prelims.

Kendra Krueger Dominates On Way to 2 State Titles

Jordan senior Kendra Krueger dominated the Class AA competition on her way to her first two state titles in the 800m and 1600m. In the 800m, Krueger won with a time of 2:13.13 to win by just under a second over Delia Johnson. In the 1600m, Krueger won by 3 seconds over Isabelle Schmitz with a time of 4:53.90. Both marks were new class records for Class AA. Her 1600m time of 4:53.90 is the 17th fastest time in state meet history.

Stocke Doubles Up and Repeats as Champion

Rock Ridge senior Cameron Stocke won his third straight 1600m title (2x Class AA, 1x Class A) and added an 800m title on top of that to finish his high school career as a 4x Minnesota state champion. Stocke improved on his Class AA 1600m state meet record, finishing with a time of 4:11.25. In the 800m, Stocke was able to just beat 2022 champion Kaleb Sharp to the line, finishing with a time of 1:52.79.

Stewartville Throws Duo Sweeps the Shot Put and Discus

Stewartville senior duo Peyton Byrne and Torasbjorn Lunaas won the Class AA titles in the shot put and discus to make it a clean sweep for the Stewartville boys. Byrne won the shot put with a throw 54' 8" to win the title by just a quarter inch over Alexander Jensen. Lunaas had a throw of 174' 11" to win the discus title in a deep field that saw eight boys beat last years winning throw. Peytons brother Shane was also a shot put state champion back in 2019.

Borsch Wins Three Titles

She won two titles last year and narrowly won a third. This year Jordyn Borsch completed the clean sweep of the sprints events in winning the 100m, 200m, and 400m titles for Class AAA. In the 100m, Borsch ran a time of 11.65 that would've been a state record if it were wind-legal, and won by just 0.05 seconds. In the 200m, Borsch ran a time of 23.70 to easily win and also easily won the 400m with a time of 54.44 to win by over a second.

Bills Demolishes State Discus Record

Hayden Bills set his second state record of the season by demolishing Karl Erickson's 22-year-old state discus record when he recorded a throw of 207 feet to beat Erickson's record of 201' 7". Bills completed a clean sweep this season going undefeated in the shot put and discus, while setting new state records in both events.
